How nutrition, lifestyle and emotional support can improve menopause symptoms

Nutritional Health Support Antonia - Hormone Health
In this article, Hormone Health Associate and Registered Nutritional Therapist, Antonia de Gier explains the support she offers and how our Nutritional Health Support Package can help.

As many women in their 40s and 50s realise or become increasingly aware, these decades can become a time of tremendous upheaval, uncertainty, and change.  As a professional woman in this age bracket, I understand and can offer support with these changes first-hand, through my own experiences and my qualifications in nutritional therapy and behavioural change techniques.

Impact of lifestyle changes on dietary health

Not only are hormone changes taking place which can lead to a range of symptoms that many women do not even associate with their age, but you may be juggling a career, raising children and in particular teenage angst and all that that entails, running a home, facing long term relationship queries, the end of relationships, beginning of new ones, sometimes dealing with elderly parents and their care.  Even with the best eating regime in place, all too often it is so easy to become overwhelmed with life in general, and the first elements to suffer are your dietary habits and stress levels.

Digestive and hormone health

Stress can have a huge impact on your general well-being; hormone levels, in particular blood sugar levels leading to hunger pangs, sugar/caffeine cravings, irregular eating and weight gain, your sleep pattern can go awry leading to brain fog, mood swings and poor food choices and your immune systems can become depleted, leading to an increase in infections such as colds, headaches, and urinary infections.

Digestive health can also be heavily impacted by stress, immune and hormone levels, and your food choices can greatly support your digestive health or hinder it, leading to feelings of low energy, bloating, constipation/diarrhoea, development of some food intolerances and skin conditions.

Choosing the right dietary advice

You may be overwhelmed by the information in the press and particularly on social media about what foods to eat, and what foods not to eat, this diet works whilst this diet doesn’t. Eat more protein and fewer carbs, eat more carbs and less protein, eat fat, don’t eat fat, eat alkaline, eat plant-based, move more but which type of exercise and indeed food is best for your age and stage in life?

The overwhelming choices and information can lead to confusion and a negative mindset.  In general, you probably know what you “should” and “should not” be eating, you’ve likely tried some form of diet by the time you reach your 40s and 50s and indeed continue to try.  What worked in your 20s and 30s sadly does not work in the peri and menopausal years.

I often hear women lamenting,

“I have done nothing different, but I am gaining weight, and my body shape is changing and nothing I do seems to work”.

Whilst weight gain is often the distressing signal that causes you to seek help, many other symptoms can be affected, often without even realising.  Some additional examples can also include night sweats, anxiety, low mood and irritability, memory difficulties, bodily aches and pains, dizziness and vaginal dryness.

Dietary and lifestyle support for long-term positive change

I can support you in making long-term dietary changes and achieving sustainable positive food habits that can lead to a healthier, more balanced life whilst including the ENJOYMENT of food.  Most women come to see me regarding their weight management worries, and I can devise a tailor-made programme to best understand, help and support each individual woman in a non-judgemental encouraging environment.  Generally, women encounter a more emotional relationship with food and can stick to a “diet” for one or two weeks, but invariably fall off the wagon and end up feeling worse than when they started the regime.

I am qualified to assist in behavioural change techniques that can help to switch long-term negative emotional, psychological beliefs around food and diet into positive beliefs and food choices which can be learnt, incorporated, and maintained over time.  I take the time to understand each case individually and most importantly LISTEN and gain insight into the various relationships with food and lifestyle.

Women may also face serious mid-age illness onset as well, such as breast cancer or heart health issues, and support in these areas can also be offered.

Flexible tailored support

I am very happy to arrange a complimentary 15-minute nutritional health discovery call over the telephone or virtually to help you understand what an individual consultation and beyond would entail and I can find out more about how I can help you.

When you are ready to proceed, we can then arrange an initial one-off consultation where we will discuss fully your nutritional and lifestyle habits and prepare a clear plan of action, or a personalised Nutritional Health Support Package that offers a saving of £100 and consists of one initial full consultation and a follow-up consultation to review your progress.
